How to install a double DIN stereo in GM trucks and SUV's

Applications:
Chevrolet:

2003 - 2006 Avalanche
2003 - 2006 Silverado
2007 Silverado Classic
2003 - 2006 Tahoe
2003 - 2006 Suburban
GMC:

2003 - 2006 Sierra
2007 Sierra Classic
2003 - 2006 Yukon
2003 - 2006 Yukon XL

Step 1:

Disconnect the negative battery terminal

Lower the steering wheel all the way down and shift the shifter all the way down. Then gently pry the dash panel off by pulling straight towards you releasing all of the clips.
Step 2:

Once you have released all of the clips you will then pull the dash panel towards you until the instrument cluster clears the dash and then pull and and remove the trim

Step 3:

There are three 9/32 bolt holding the stereo in place. You will use a socket to remove these three bolts.
Step 4:

Remove the radio by pulling straight out and remove the clips in the back by squeezing together and the antenna cable will just pull out.

Step 5:

Most aftermarket double DIN stereos will be too deep to fit properly in the dash without trimming some of the rear support. So the next thing we have to do is trim this rear support so the double DIN stereo will fit.
Step 6:

Here is a full view of what needs to be trimmed. You will trim along the red lines. Also there is at least one rivet that is holding the rear support in place. Be careful when removing this you do not crack the rest of the radio support.

If trimming the piece while it is in the car be careful not to trim and wiring or other components.

Step 7:

Here is a close up view of the rivet and the middle that will need to be trimmed.

You can remove the rivet and then remove the entire surround to trim it on a bench top if that is easier then doing it in the car.
Step 8:

Here is a close up of what we removed. The entire middle support was removed and the bottom left and right corners will be trimmed as well.

Even with this rear support trimmed, the new stereo will have plenty of support from the 4 other supports.

Step 9:

You will follow the directions included with the dash kit and wiring harness to assemble the dash kit and connect the harness.

Remember most dash kits these days are ISO mount kits so you do not use the metal sleeve and the face of the stereo goes into the back of the dash kit. This will allow you to get a nice flush look like the stereo to the left.
You are all finished. Assemble the dash in the opposite steps and connect the battery and you are good to go.
